How We Help

Trauma Recovery

Many of the young people who join our academy have experienced attachment difficulties or trauma in their early lives. Our staff are trained in attachment‑ and trauma‑aware practice, and we’ve created an environment that is calm, predictable and nurturing. This allows students to feel safe, build trust at their own pace and access learning in a way that genuinely supports their wellbeing and development.

Stablise → Integrate → Adapt

Stabilise:

  • Creating safety and calm: We start by building predictable routines, clear boundaries and a calm environment. Students learn regulation strategies, connect with trusted adults and begin to feel secure enough to stay, participate and settle.

Integrate:

  • Understanding emotions and building confidence: Once a young person feels safe, we help them make sense of their feelings, behaviours and strengths. Through positive relationships, hands‑on success and reflective conversations, they develop emotional literacy and rebuild self‑belief.

Adapt:

  • Practising new skills and growing independence: Students begin applying what they’ve learned in real‑world situations. They try new strategies, take on responsibility, build resilience and transfer their skills into education, work and everyday life.

Outcome:

  • By moving through Stabilise → Integrate → Adapt, young people develop emotional security, confidence and the practical tools they need to thrive beyond the academy.

Where Young People Feel Safe Enough to Grow Again

Our trauma‑informed approach gives learners the stability, trust and emotional safety they need before anything else can happen. Many young people arrive overwhelmed, shut down or unable to cope with the demands of everyday life. They may struggle with routines, relationships, learning or simply feeling safe in the world.

Through our Stabilise → Integrate → Adapt model, students begin to rebuild the foundations that make learning, independence and connection possible.

Trauma‑informed practice at the academy specifically supports:

Feeling unsafe or overwhelmed
Difficulty managing emotions
Anxiety in new or busy environments
Shutdowns or avoidance of learning
Struggles with trust in adults
Fear of routines, expectations or change
Social withdrawal
Low confidence and self belief
Difficulty forming relationships
Poor resilience after setbacks
Challenges with responsibility and decision making

What Our Trauma‑Informed Strategy Supports

Our trauma‑informed approach is designed to help young people rebuild the foundations they need to take part in everyday life again. Many arrive feeling overwhelmed, disconnected or unable to cope with the demands of school, relationships or community settings. By working through our Stabilise → Integrate → Adapt model, we support them to:

  • Re‑engage with everyday routines: Students learn how to manage mornings, transitions, expectations and responsibilities in a calm, supported way.
  • Rebuild trust in adults and environments: Consistent relationships and predictable structures help young people feel safe enough to participate, try again and stay regulated.
  • Reconnect with learning: Once they feel stable, students can focus, problem‑solve, communicate and take part in education without fear or shutdown.
  • Develop social confidence: Through positive peer experiences, teamwork and guided communication, they learn how to form healthy relationships and navigate social situations.
  • Re‑enter community life: Outdoor learning, volunteering, group activities and real‑world tasks help students practise being part of society again — safely, gradually and with support.
  • Build emotional resilience: They learn how to understand their feelings, recognise triggers and use strategies that help them cope in everyday situations.
  • Prepare for adulthood: As they adapt, students begin taking on responsibility, making decisions and building the independence they’ll need for work, further education and life beyond the academy.
Success Stories

Stories That Say More Than We Ever Could.

The best way to understand what we do is to hear from the young people and families who've lived it. Discover how others have found confidence, purpose and a future they didn't think was possible.

George arrived at Shropshire Adventures Academy with a love of horses but no qualifications, and found new situations and social interaction difficult.

Over two years, he worked through the BHS Bronze and Silver Challenge Awards, Stage 1 and 2 Ride and Care, Ride Safe, and was recognised nationally with the BHS Changing Lives Award.

He's since completed his Stage 2 Trek Leader exams and is working towards a future in the equine industry, confident, qualified and ready.

Kaden arrived at Shropshire Adventures Academy housebound for four years with severe anxiety, unable to read, write or believe he had a future.

Working at his own pace with Dan and Flash, he rebuilt trust, rediscovered his sense of humour, and developed new interests in horses, films and music.

He now gets himself ready each morning, looks forward to his days at the academy, and is a confident, engaged young person with goals and a renewed sense of self.
Kaden
BH struggled in mainstream school, overwhelmed by fast-paced lessons and busy classrooms, and lost trust in the idea that education could work for him.

At Shropshire Adventures Academy, a smaller, relationship-centred approach helped him feel safe, listened to and free from judgement.

He rediscovered curiosity, resilience and pride in his own achievements, and now approaches learning with confidence instead of fear. The change has reassured his foster family too, who now feel hopeful about his future.
