How We Help

Equine Studies

Our Equine Studies curriculum features the prestigious BHS Changing Lives Through Horses program alongside BHSQ Work-Based Diplomas. By combining therapeutic, hands-on learning with nationally recognised qualifications, we offer a purposeful alternative to traditional education, all set within our award-winning equestrian centre.

At Shropshire Adventures, the yard is our classroom. Supported by a knowledgeable, nurturing, and trauma-informed team, young people thrive in a calm, structured outdoor environment. Here, horses become partners in growth, helping learners manage emotions, develop resilience, and build the practical skills and personal confidence needed to step successfully into adulthood.

Recognised Equine Qualifications

BHS Changing Lives Through Horses
This transformative program harnesses the unique, intuitive nature of horses to support emotional growth and personal development. Through structured sessions, hands-on tasks, and meaningful connections with our herd, young people build vital life skills including resilience, self-confidence, effective communication, teamwork, independence, and creative problem-solving. It is a gentle yet powerful pathway for those rediscovering their potential.

Work-Based Diplomas
A fully practical, hands-on qualification designed specifically for young people who learn best by doing. Working alongside our supportive equine staff, learners gain real-world skills on a busy, award-winning yard. The curriculum covers the essentials of professional equine welfare—including grooming, feeding, anatomy, health identification, handling, stable management, and everyday yard operations—providing a direct stepping stone to future employability.

Where Young People Find Confidence, Calm and Purpose

Equine studies at the academy is far more than learning to care for horses. For many of our learners, it reaches parts of their development that traditional settings struggle to unlock.

A lot of young people arrive feeling anxious, withdrawn, unsure of themselves and disconnected from learning. Horses change that. Quietly, consistently and without judgement, they help students rebuild trust in themselves and in others.

Working with horses gives young people space to breathe, space to try, and space to succeed. Every small win becomes a step towards confidence, resilience and healthier relationships.

Equine studies at the academy specifically supports:

Low confidence
Low self belief
Anxiety and emotional overwhelm
Difficulty regulating emotions
Social withdrawal
Communication challenges
Fear of new experiences
Struggles with responsibility
Low resilience
Difficulty making decisions
Lack of trust in adults or peers

How the programme supports our learners

  • Stronger communication skills: Young people practise expressing themselves clearly, listening well and following instructions. These everyday communication skills help them feel more confident in school, social situations and future workplaces.
  • Growing confidence and self‑belief: Small, achievable challenges, from grooming to leading, help learners recognise their strengths and take pride in their progress. Success becomes something they can feel, not just hear about.
  • Healthier relationships: Horses teach empathy, patience and trust. By working with our herd and alongside staff and peers, students learn how to build positive, respectful relationships with others.
  • Better problem‑solving and decision‑making: Real tasks require real thinking. Learners plan ahead, adapt when things change and make safe, thoughtful choices that support independence both on and off the yard.
  • Improved resilience and emotional regulation: Setbacks happen, and that is part of the learning. Students practise staying calm, trying again and managing their emotions in a supportive environment where mistakes are simply part of the process.
  • Greater independence: From organising equipment to completing routines, learners take responsibility for their tasks. Over time, they develop autonomy, organisation and a growing sense of ownership over their learning.
Success Stories

Stories That Say More Than We Ever Could.

The best way to understand what we do is to hear from the young people and families who've lived it. Discover how others have found confidence, purpose and a future they didn't think was possible.

George arrived at Shropshire Adventures Academy with a love of horses but no qualifications, and found new situations and social interaction difficult.

Over two years, he worked through the BHS Bronze and Silver Challenge Awards, Stage 1 and 2 Ride and Care, Ride Safe, and was recognised nationally with the BHS Changing Lives Award.

He's since completed his Stage 2 Trek Leader exams and is working towards a future in the equine industry, confident, qualified and ready.

Kaden arrived at Shropshire Adventures Academy housebound for four years with severe anxiety, unable to read, write or believe he had a future.

Working at his own pace with Dan and Flash, he rebuilt trust, rediscovered his sense of humour, and developed new interests in horses, films and music.

He now gets himself ready each morning, looks forward to his days at the academy, and is a confident, engaged young person with goals and a renewed sense of self.

BH struggled in mainstream school, overwhelmed by fast-paced lessons and busy classrooms, and lost trust in the idea that education could work for him.

At Shropshire Adventures Academy, a smaller, relationship-centred approach helped him feel safe, listened to and free from judgement.

He rediscovered curiosity, resilience and pride in his own achievements, and now approaches learning with confidence instead of fear. The change has reassured his foster family too, who now feel hopeful about his future.
