How We Help

Outdoor Education & Maintenance

For young people who've struggled in classrooms, the natural world offers something different. Space to breathe, challenges worth tackling and the freedom to discover what they're really capable of.

More Than Fresh Air

Our outdoor education programme combines activities with maintenance services, running five days a week across 30 acres of woodland, lake and open countryside. Every session is purposeful, every activity is adapted to the individual and nothing feels like a lesson.

Where Young People Discover What They're Made Of

Outdoor education isn't just about activity. For our learners, it addresses challenges that classroom-based provision simply can't reach.

Many of the young people we work with arrive with low confidence, social anxiety, a fear of trying new things and years of physical inactivity behind them.

The outdoors changes that. Gradually, gently and without pressure, learners discover they're more capable than they believed.

Outdoor education at the academy specifically supports:

Low Confidence
Self-belief
Fear of New Experiences
Anxiety
Social Withdrawal
Communication Difficulties
Physical Inactivity
Lack of Resilience
Perseverance

What Our Learners Gain

The benefits of outdoor education go far beyond the activity itself. What starts as lighting a fire or paddling across a lake becomes something much more significant.

Learners build genuine confidence through real challenge. When a young person who's never left the house completes a walk up Shropshire's highest hill, or a learner who's spent years indoors paddles across a lake for the first time, that sense of achievement is transformative. It proves to them, in a way no certificate can, that they are capable.

Maintenance skills learned outdoors transfer directly to employment and adult life. Problem-solving, teamwork and managing frustration are all practised in engaging, meaningful contexts that employers in outdoor, conservation and land-based sectors genuinely value.

Most importantly, outdoor education reframes what learning feels like. For young people who associate education with failure and anxiety, discovering that it can be enjoyable and achievable is a turning point.

Success Stories

Stories That Say More Than We Ever Could.

The best way to understand what we do is to hear from the young people and families who've lived it. Discover how others have found confidence, purpose and a future they didn't think was possible.

George arrived at Shropshire Adventures Academy with a love of horses but no qualifications, and found new situations and social interaction difficult.

Over two years, he worked through the BHS Bronze and Silver Challenge Awards, Stage 1 and 2 Ride and Care, Ride Safe, and was recognised nationally with the BHS Changing Lives Award.

He's since completed his Stage 2 Trek Leader exams and is working towards a future in the equine industry, confident, qualified and ready.

Kaden arrived at Shropshire Adventures Academy housebound for four years with severe anxiety, unable to read, write or believe he had a future.

Working at his own pace with Dan and Flash, he rebuilt trust, rediscovered his sense of humour, and developed new interests in horses, films and music.

He now gets himself ready each morning, looks forward to his days at the academy, and is a confident, engaged young person with goals and a renewed sense of self.

BH struggled in mainstream school, overwhelmed by fast-paced lessons and busy classrooms, and lost trust in the idea that education could work for him.

At Shropshire Adventures Academy, a smaller, relationship-centred approach helped him feel safe, listened to and free from judgement.

He rediscovered curiosity, resilience and pride in his own achievements, and now approaches learning with confidence instead of fear. The change has reassured his foster family too, who now feel hopeful about his future.

FAQs

Your questions, answered.

We know you'll have questions. Here are the ones we hear most often.

Does my child need any outdoor experience to join?

Not at all. Most of our learners have never done outdoor activities before they arrive. We start from absolute beginner level and adapt every session to wherever your child is starting from. Many learners who were initially reluctant become the most enthusiastic members of the group.

What if my child refuses to take part?

Refusal is always met with patience, never pressure. We'll take the time to understand what's making your child anxious and work gently to build their confidence over time. Many learners who refused certain activities in their first weeks are now the first to put their hand up.

Is it safe?

Yes. All activities are fully risk-assessed and delivered by qualified staff. Our water sports and water rescue sessions are delivered in partnership with Adventure Consultancy, and all activities are supervised throughout. Learners are never pushed beyond safe limits. The focus is always on gradual, supported challenge.

What will my child actually gain from outdoor education?

Confidence, resilience, practical skills and a completely different relationship with learning. Beyond the personal development, learners can also work towards nationally recognised qualifications in outdoor first aid, water rescue and navigation, all of which are valued by employers in outdoor and land-based sectors.

What qualifications are available through the outdoor education programme?

Learners can work towards Emergency First Aid in the Outdoors, Water Rescue Awareness and Navigation Awards, all nationally recognised. We're also developing a broader land-based pathway with additional qualifications planned. All provision is delivered on-site or through our established partner Adventure Consultancy.

How does outdoor education contribute to EHCP targets?

Outdoor education directly supports EHCP outcomes related to personal development, emotional regulation, communication, teamwork and preparation for adulthood. Every activity is purposeful and mapped to individual learner targets. Progress is documented throughout the year through observation-based assessment rather than formal examination.

How do you manage risk for learners with complex needs?

Yes. All activities are fully risk-assessed and delivered by qualified staff. Our water sports and water rescue sessions are delivered in partnership with Adventure Consultancy, and all activities are supervised throughout. Learners are never pushed beyond safe limits. The focus is always on gradual, supported challenge.

What evidence of progress can you provide?

Confidence, resilience, practical skills and a completely different relationship with learning. Beyond the personal development, learners can also work towards nationally recognised qualifications in outdoor first aid, water rescue and navigation, all of which are valued by employers in outdoor and land-based sectors.
