How We Help

Preparing for Adulthood

Preparation for adulthood sits at the heart of our curriculum. Our key themes are woven through everyday learning, giving students the practical skills, confidence and understanding they need for life beyond the academy. Everything we do is designed to support them as they grow into independent, capable young people ready for their next steps.

The Four Pillars

  • Higher Education and Employment: We help students discover what they’re good at, what they enjoy, and what their future could look like. Through hands‑on learning, workplace‑style routines, real responsibilities and practical skill‑building, students begin to see themselves as young adults with something valuable to offer. They learn how to show up, communicate, problem‑solve and take pride in their work , the foundations of any successful next step.
  • Independent Living and Housing: Independence is built in small, everyday moments. Cooking, budgeting, planning, organising, looking after equipment, managing time, these are woven into our curriculum so students learn by doing, not by being told. We create safe opportunities for young people to practise the skills they’ll need to live well, whether that’s moving into supported accommodation, living with family, or taking their first steps towards independence.
  • Participation in the Local Community and Positive Relationships: Many of our students arrive having never truly felt part of a community. We change that. Through group challenges, outdoor learning, volunteering opportunities and positive social experiences, students learn how to build healthy relationships, contribute to something bigger than themselves, and feel a sense of belonging. They practise teamwork, empathy, communication and trust, skills that shape how they show up in the world.
  • Good Health: Good health is more than fitness. It’s emotional resilience, self‑awareness, confidence and the ability to make positive choices. Our environment gives students space to breathe, reset and reconnect with themselves. Through physical activity, time outdoors, structured routines and supportive relationships, they learn what it feels like to be well, and how to maintain that long after they leave us.

Where Young People Build the Skills They Need for Life

Preparing for Adulthood at the academy is more than a curriculum. For many learners, it fills the gaps traditional education hasn’t been able to reach.

Young people often arrive unsure of themselves, anxious about the future and struggling with everyday independence. They may find routines, relationships or planning for next steps difficult.

Our programme changes that. Through real experiences, practical tasks and steady support, students begin to understand who they are, what they can do and how to move forward with confidence.

Preparing for Adulthood at the academy specifically supports:

Low confidence
Uncertainty about the future
Difficulty with independence
Poor organisation and daily routines
Anxiety in social situations
Limited problem solving
Low resilience
Difficulty communicating needs
Lack of community participation
Struggles with responsibility

How This Supports Our Students’ Futures

Everything within our Preparing for Adulthood curriculum is designed with one purpose: to help young people move forward with confidence, clarity and real‑world readiness. The skills they build here don’t stay in the classroom, they shape the way students approach their next steps in life.

  • Stronger Sense of Self: Students begin to understand who they are, what they’re capable of and what they want from their future. They leave with a clearer identity and a growing belief in their own potential.
  • Readiness for Further Education, Training or Employment: With practical experience, improved communication and a stronger work ethic, students are better prepared for college courses, apprenticeships, supported internships or employment pathways. They know how to show up, stay focused and take responsibility.
  • Greater Independence at Home and in the Community: From managing daily routines to navigating social situations, students develop the confidence to take on more responsibility in their lives. Families often tell us they see calmer routines, better organisation and more willingness to try things independently.
  • Healthier Relationships and Social Confidence: By practising teamwork, empathy and trust, students learn how to build positive relationships with peers, adults and the wider community. They begin to feel part of something, not outside of it.
  • Improved Wellbeing and Emotional Resilience: Time outdoors, structured routines and supportive relationships help students regulate emotions, manage stress and make healthier choices. They learn what it feels like to be well and how to maintain that.
  • A Positive, Achievable Future: Most importantly, students leave with hope. They’ve experienced success, challenge, belonging and growth. They can picture a future that feels possible, and they have the skills to take the next step towards it.
Success Stories

Stories That Say More Than We Ever Could.

The best way to understand what we do is to hear from the young people and families who've lived it. Discover how others have found confidence, purpose and a future they didn't think was possible.

George arrived at Shropshire Adventures Academy with a love of horses but no qualifications, and found new situations and social interaction difficult.

Over two years, he worked through the BHS Bronze and Silver Challenge Awards, Stage 1 and 2 Ride and Care, Ride Safe, and was recognised nationally with the BHS Changing Lives Award.

He's since completed his Stage 2 Trek Leader exams and is working towards a future in the equine industry, confident, qualified and ready.

Kaden arrived at Shropshire Adventures Academy housebound for four years with severe anxiety, unable to read, write or believe he had a future.

Working at his own pace with Dan and Flash, he rebuilt trust, rediscovered his sense of humour, and developed new interests in horses, films and music.

He now gets himself ready each morning, looks forward to his days at the academy, and is a confident, engaged young person with goals and a renewed sense of self.

BH struggled in mainstream school, overwhelmed by fast-paced lessons and busy classrooms, and lost trust in the idea that education could work for him.

At Shropshire Adventures Academy, a smaller, relationship-centred approach helped him feel safe, listened to and free from judgement.

He rediscovered curiosity, resilience and pride in his own achievements, and now approaches learning with confidence instead of fear. The change has reassured his foster family too, who now feel hopeful about his future.
