How We Help

Functional Skills

Not your standard English and Maths. We take a calm, practical approach to small activities, real scenarios and simple techniques that help students build confidence without the pressure of a typical lesson.

Learning at Your Pace

We use PASS Functional Skills from Entry Level 3 through to Level 1 and Level 2, giving learners a clear, supported pathway as they progress. Because our exams can be taken at any point in the year, students have genuine flexibility, no big build‑ups, no pressure, just steady preparation at a pace that suits them. Wherever possible, we weave in equine activities and outdoor learning, using real experiences to help make English and Maths feel meaningful, calm and accessible.

Where Young People Rebuild Confidence in Learning

Functional Skills at our academy isn’t just about passing exams. For many of our learners, it repairs years of feeling behind, overwhelmed or disconnected from education.

A lot of young people arrive believing they “can’t do” English or Maths. They’ve had pressure, big build‑ups, stressful classrooms and experiences that left them doubting their own ability.

Our approach changes that. With flexible exams, calm teaching, outdoor learning and real‑world tasks, students begin to see that they can learn, they can progress and they can succeed.

Functional Skills at the academy specifically supports:

Low confidence in English and Maths
Fear of exams
Anxiety around learning
Difficulty focusing in traditional classrooms
Gaps in literacy and numeracy
Low motivation
Avoidance of academic tasks
Struggles with organisation and planning
Lack of real‑world application
Feeling “behind” or unable to catch up

How Functional Skills Support Our Learners

Our Functional Skills pathway gives students the confidence and practical ability they need to use English and Maths in real life, not just in a classroom.

  • Building Confidence in Learning: The flexible, low‑pressure structure helps students re‑engage with education and feel capable again.
  • Real‑World Literacy and Numeracy: By linking learning to horses, outdoor tasks and hands‑on activities, students understand how English and Maths apply to everyday situations.
  • Independence and Everyday Life Skills: Students develop the ability to read instructions, plan tasks, measure, budget and communicate clearly.
  • Progression Into Education or Employment: Achieving Entry Level 3 through to Level 2 gives students recognised qualifications that support college applications, apprenticeships and work‑based training.
  • Calm, Accessible Learning: The combination of outdoor learning, practical tasks and flexible exam timings helps students learn at a pace that feels safe and manageable.
  • A Clear Path Forward: Students leave with stronger skills, more confidence and a better understanding of what they can achieve next.
Success Stories

Stories That Say More Than We Ever Could.

The best way to understand what we do is to hear from the young people and families who've lived it. Discover how others have found confidence, purpose and a future they didn't think was possible.

George arrived at Shropshire Adventures Academy with a love of horses but no qualifications, and found new situations and social interaction difficult.

Over two years, he worked through the BHS Bronze and Silver Challenge Awards, Stage 1 and 2 Ride and Care, Ride Safe, and was recognised nationally with the BHS Changing Lives Award.

He's since completed his Stage 2 Trek Leader exams and is working towards a future in the equine industry, confident, qualified and ready.
George
Kaden arrived at Shropshire Adventures Academy housebound for four years with severe anxiety, unable to read, write or believe he had a future.

Working at his own pace with Dan and Flash, he rebuilt trust, rediscovered his sense of humour, and developed new interests in horses, films and music.

He now gets himself ready each morning, looks forward to his days at the academy, and is a confident, engaged young person with goals and a renewed sense of self.
Kaden
BH struggled in mainstream school, overwhelmed by fast-paced lessons and busy classrooms, and lost trust in the idea that education could work for him.

At Shropshire Adventures Academy, a smaller, relationship-centred approach helped him feel safe, listened to and free from judgement.

He rediscovered curiosity, resilience and pride in his own achievements, and now approaches learning with confidence instead of fear. The change has reassured his foster family too, who now feel hopeful about his future.
